I appreciate your reframing the discussion about impactful record albums under "favorite," not "greatest." I also like how you came up with three ways to assess your favorites. I stick to your first one -- which albums do I keep returning to year after year? I suppose usIng timeless as a metric skews my answers to older albums that have aged as I have, but I am OK with that because I think my answers are more informed as my musical tastes evolve and my life experiences change (after all, musical tastes are just as much about you as they are the artist). The metric of timelessness also helps me avoid making a rush to judgment about albums that either took time to grew on me or that sounded interesting at first but lacked staying power for various reasons. "Dark Side of the Moon" hits me just as hard at age 61 as it did when I was 21. So, I can confidently call that one a favorite, which then leads to the question, Why? Because the album connected with universal themes when it was released in 1973, and millions of people (including me) responded . Thank you for your essay. I enjoyed reading it.
